About Roses In Houston

...Every journey begins with a dream and a vision...

The purpose of the website/blog and community is to help us learn more than just growing roses. This online space is here to share lessons learned through nature during challenging times, how to go through life when things get tough while building trust and detaching from perfections/high expectations amidst the uncertainties and the unknowns, just like how nature is showing us.

My Story

Me in my backyard with my roses

Me in my very own backyard

I've always loved flowers, particularly roses since a young age. On my way home from school when I lived in Bangkok, Thailand, I'd stop by a fresh market to buy roses, especially roses. I could get lost among all the flowers and feel them emerging into them.

I was never a gardener. In contrast, my mom loved plants and flowers, At a young age, while I loved flowers, I had no interest in growing them. I hated dirt, earthworms and the whole messy gardening activities.

As with many things in life, at different times/phases, you end up becoming interested in what you once had no interest in. I started herb and veggies gardening when moving into our home in 2017. I was so excited to have a garden again after living in an apartment for 3 years.

I didn't seriously get into roses until Covid (2020). For the longest time, I didn't want to grow roses because of their bad reputation for high pests and diseases, plus the need to use chemicals to keep them healthy. The thought of constantly applying chemicals stopped me from wanting to grow them.

During Covid while having an opportunity to work from home, I thought I gave it a shot. With more time at home, it may work out. Since then, I've learned so much about growing roses without using fungicide, insecticide, miticide, systemic products, organic/neem.

Since 2020, there's many lessons, challenges, new knowledge, and wisdom through the no-chemical methods. Many moments of doubts and worries because of the unknowns and high pest/disease pressure. I stuck through it all even when things got tough. Through this process, I've learned to build resilience, trust, faith, and most importantly, the level of patience that I didn't have before. Many life lessons are learned through observing nature and their growing, coping, adjusting and natural process.
